The Abasha River spent millions of years cutting a 2,400-metre gorge through limestone at Inchkhuri, and for most of the twentieth century almost nobody saw it. The canyon sat on the private estate of the Dadiani family, princes of Samegrelo, who used its cold turquoise pools as a summer bathing place.
Dinosaur footprints remain pressed into the rock above the water, dated to the Cretaceous. The estate was seized after 1921, and the gorge reverted to farmland and rumour until protected status arrived and the site opened to the public.
Promet32heus Cave, thirty kilometres east at Kumistavi, was found in 1984 by speleologists working the karst plateau north of Kutaisi. Its passages run for more than eleven kilometres; roughly 1,400 metres are open on the tourist route, threaded through six chambers with an underground river at the lowest point. The formations — stalactites, stalagmites, curtain flowstone, cave pearls — sit under a coloured lighting scheme installed during the 2010 development works. Okatse Canyon, often bundled into the same Imereti canyon and cave day trip, adds a third register: a 780-metre steel walkway cantilevered along a cliff face roughly twenty metres above the Okatse River, engineered in the 2010s and reached through the Dadiani forest park at Gordi. Together the three form the standard Kutaisi landmarks circuit sold from the city.
What holds the itinerary together is temperature and light. Martvili is bright, green, loud with water; Prometheus is fourteen degrees year-round, silent apart from drip and footfall.
